The War Against Terrorism On August 2nd 1990, Iraq invaded the small oil rich country of Kuwait on its southeastern border. Iraq claimed that Kuwait was a long time province from the 1800’s and early 1900s’, whose lands belonged under control of Iraq, a so-called province. Saddam Hussein also argued that Kuwait was pumping oil from an oil field that was on the border of the two countries and belonged to Iraq. Upon gaining control of Kuwait, Hussein was able to eliminate his previous debt to Kuwait and gain it’s substantial oil wealth, roughly 10% of the worlds oil supply. Regardless of the motives behind Iraq’s invasion, under international law, none of Iraq’s claims against Kuwait justified its invasion of that country. Led mainly by the United States, and supported by the United Nations, a new war on terrorism has begun. Overwhelming support worldwide has surfaced as President Bush has vowed to punish those who decide to commit terrorist acts, as well as those who harbor or condone these activities. So far Bush has followed through on his promise with the war in Afghanistan against the Taliban regime. Others are also displaying their understanding of the situation and are treading a great deal lighter in search of their causes to avoid being labeled as terrorists, as shown by the latest disarmament and return to the negotiating table by the Irish Republican Army. As the world watches, President Bush is now faced with enormous pressure to gain control of the Arab-Israeli conflict. However, this situation is a difficult one. With Israeli’s continual attempt to occupy more land in the disputed settlements, Palestinian anger only grows. Question: Analyse the Case Study Of B.R. Richardson Company. Answer: Introduction In the critical analysis of the B.R. Richardson Timber Products Corporation (BRRTPC) is about the changes of interventions the company has applied due to the decreased productivity and shortage of employees. This small lumber company situated in Papoose, Oregon was with low self-esteemed, morale, safety issues and an authoritative manager. The assignment talks about the case study in which, Lawler, a consultant along with his two students tries to gather information about the company. The diagnosis moves from analysis to management of programs (Ravanfar, 2015). Jack Lawler, the consultant used an operative strategy while signing the contract. Lawler set up few meetings with Bowman and Richardson to understand the kind of service they needed from him. Afterwards, he offered three variety of course of actions depending on which Bowman and Richardson could hire him. The company opted for option three; hence, the investigation was begun independently. Prime aim of the investigation was to find out the issues affecting the company economically and ethically. Two students of Lawler helped to analyze the perception of the issue from employees as well as employers point of view. Consultants point of view was also taken into consideration. These data or informations were used to develop this report. Therefore, in this report, in the light of this Cases study, the change process and management procedures are being used to analyze the business situation in BRRTPC. The McKinsey 7S model has been used to evaluate understand and diagnose the collected information of their work environment and employee behavior (Alshaher, 2013). Discussion Contract and Entering stage Entry of Consultant and part-time professor Jack Lawler occurred when the Relation Manager of the B.R. industry, Richard Bowman asked him to take a training session for the blue-collar employees of their lamination plant. Lawler asked for more information about the company from Bowman. Hence, Bowman agreed to meet Lawler personally along with the company president Richardson. However, after meeting Lawler decided to conduct an investigation personally to understand the required training topics. In the letter, Lawler has described the three alternatives for Bowman and Richardson. First alternative provided was to contact in their geographic area to motivate the employees. The second alternative was to let Lawler to be engaged in the investigation to identify the non-controlled issues and solutions to address those problems. The final and third option provided to Bowman and Richardson was to enable Lawler involve a team of two students to diagnose the lamination plant and to provide re commendation. These three course of action was with different pricing options. Additional price would have been charged depending on the course of action. The company board did not want to spend a lot of money for investigation purpose, however wanted the expertise advice of Lawler in the issue. Hence, Lawlers students were allowed to visit the plant and investigate about the problems it was facing. Analysis of the information gathered (problem identification) The informations gathered from the investigation can easily be categorized using the McKinsey 7S model. Two consultants of McKinsey, Robert Waterman and Tom peters developed this model in 1980s. This model consists of seven interdependent factors including soft and hard factors. Hard factors are strategy, structure and system of any organization. These factors are easily identifiable. Soft factors includes values, staff and style. These factors are less tangible and influenced by culture. In this critical analysis, this 7S model has been employed to interrogate the BRRTC. Seven factors of 7S model Structure: Structure of an organization is defined as a framework that clearly divides the work or task among employees, controls administrative machinery and integrates the whole organization in one thread (Scott, 2103). Structure of BRRTC consists of four companies; however, the case study focuses on the Papoose lamination company only. The hierarchy of personnel within the organization was managers, supervisors and after that staff lines. Juanita Yates was the secretary of Richardson, and she helped to manage all the companies together. The first problem identified in the B.R.Richardson was, the companies did not have any shared goal of vision to achieve. Creation of these companies happened with the mission to support each other, however lack of communication and shared values hampered their collaboration. For example, BRRTPC Lamination Company purchased only 30 percent of lumber from Richardson mill however; the complete lumber should be purchased from the Richardson mill. Applying this st rategy, the mill could have increase its productivity and the lamination plant could have reduced its cost to purchase raw material. Strategy and Technology: Strategy is defined as the action or steps taken by the organization to implement the proposed or anticipated changes in the external environment. These strategies are applied to achieve the advantage in the market (Peppard Ward, 2016). Strategy implemented by Richardson was primarily centered on the high production at the cost of long-term investments and cost-effective transactions. The main problem identified in the area of strategy was Richardsons attitude towards employees security and turnover rates. The company did not have any long-term plan to achieve success in the market. Authorities were only interested in achieving daily targets and deliverables rather than long-term plans for competitive advantage. This non-impressive strategy containing short-term goals hindered communication between companies and hence the production was hampered and the positive interventions were shut down. The lamination company was profitable and one of the busy companies of Richardson since its inception. However, Richardson seemed reluctant to upgrade the machinery or to implement any new technology in the production. Technologies to influence good health and safety standards were also ignored. System: In a healthy organization, system is defined as a purposeful and organized structure that contains interrelated and interdependent factors. System focuses on the factors that run the organization and controls or monitors the activities. The system of BRRTPC was not only consists of heavy machines and hardworking labours inter-related into a functional system, it was dangerous, antiquated and under functioning as well. According to the employee complaints, the quality of the equipment were dangerous and the manager was reluctant to address their problem (Scott Davis, 2015). Furthermore, few deaths and accidents inside the production made this point evident that the life of labours were at stake while working in the company. Supervisor at the lamination company mentioned the machinery as junkiest stuffs. Target of a successful company should be proper application of the log supply, more complete order fulfillment to achieve smooth production operations. However, the BRRTPC systems and processes to complete their daily target. These systems put an adverse effect on the employees motivation level and affected their safety. Moreover, it limits the ability of the company to produce more products while maintaining the quality. Staff: After reviewing the staff of BRRTPC, it is evident that huge amount of workers are blue-collars versus white collars. The educational qualification of the employees varied minutely and almost everyone has graduation degree. The staff positions available at the BRRTPC Lamination Company was supervisor, scheduler, administrative staff and quality control. a group of 15 skilled frontline labour was also there. However, there were vacancies in the company, which needed to be filled. The prime problem detected within the staff of the company is, they were not working as a team. This hindered the core values to be shared across the company. In spite of being several vacancies, there was a lack of estimated list of future employees. The human resource system was also very poor in the organization (Nielsen Randall, 2012). No specific performance measurement scale was present that ultimately resulted in rare appraisals and incentive benefits. Company hired employees in the posts that are not according to their education or experience level. Therefore, the able staff did not get the opportunity to be promoted to higher posts. The plant also lacked the training procedure, due to frequent reassignments. According to the investigation, the secretary, itself, needed to be trained in multi-tasking, general office skills and customer service, whereas the supervisor team needed training in management section (Nielsen Randall, 2012). The absence of a mission, vision and core values, which decides the future goals of corporate companies creates a situation of dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction was due to lack of appraisals, frequent job changes, lack of training sessions, overtimes and short lunch breaks and many more (Mowday, Porter Steers, 2013). Skills In the BRRTPC organization, there were different skills present along with the skills gaps. there was an unacceptable safety issue and worker had to stake their lives while working in the organization. Few accidents and fatality cases strengthens the statement. According to one of the students, who investigated the organization, workers had to work without any safety glass, saw-bands and helmet. Communication was also compromised for the company and the communication skills needed to be improved (Charness, 2012). Style: Style is comprised of the leadership style, impact of that leadership and effectiveness of the leader of the company. The leadership is supposed to involve in the front line of workers to enhance the competitiveness and cooperation within the work force (Dickerson, 2012). At BRRTPC, the leadership and management was completely involved and commanding. The supervisors had to work instead of the workers, in the absence of frontline workers. However, tis involvement was negative as the leadership used to threaten the workers. Even after achieving the quotas, the leadership used to assign some of workers with unplanned and mandatory overtime duties. Expectations from the workers were high, accountability was low and the safety was at risk (Goetsch Davis, 2014). Shared values: The work culture of Richardson Company was negative. Most of the supervisors and senior management authorities forced frontline workers to do overtime and stretched the target . Therefore, dissatisfaction, frustration and anger was common among the workers. The workers were forced to perform their work by applying do or die situations for them, where die equals to be fired from the job (Michelini Fiorentino, 2012). The higher authorities ignored the workers with hernia, broken legs or fingers and back pains by saying that the company covers their medical problems that reflects the lack of a proper human resource department. Task structure was also not defines properly within the organization. Employees used to do their daily routine monotonously. The employees were forces to resume work even after witnessing a fatal accident. However, despite of these negative effects, employees used to pull each other to perform their daily work with efficiency (Pfitzer, Bockstette Stamp, 2013). Recommendation Few recommendations that can be used for the betterment of the company are as follows: The company needs a proper Human resource management team to address the problems and situations of the workers. There are instances of accidents and deaths inside the company premises that has affected the mentality of every worker. Therefore, to take care of their safety, their humanitarian rights and their employee rights a proper human resource department is needed. The rates will fall from 40 percent to 10 percent within 3 months. The employees need different trainings to understand their work role. Supervisor and managers needed training for management issues and frontline workers need training on working with the machines safely. They also needed training to enhance their communication skills. Hence, a training program should be arranged within the company premise to train every individual within 3 months. Feedback and appraisal are part of work environment, whereas the BRRTPC Company did not had any specific performance measurement or appraisal schemes to facilitate its workers. Hence, to improve the low-esteemed and morale of the workers, the company need to implement facilitation schemes. 360 degree feedback process should be implemented for 6 months trial and feedback should be collected from the workers. Conclusion Hence, it can be concluded that work of an organizational development worker is not simple, however being a third party the practitioner sees the company with different perspective. This perspective allows the person to access areas and opinions that the company leadership cannot access. In the case study provided, Jack Lawler diagnosed the company and his perspective was reflected through McKinsey 7S model that deals with staff, structure, skills, systems, style, shared value, strategy and technology. Close attention was provided to each of this framework and it helped the Richardson Company to align all the issues that were hindering the company to achieve success. Evil in Sula and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit Essays Evil in Sula and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit Paper Evil in Sula and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit Paper Essay Topic: Literature Sula Evil, or at least each communitys perception of it, plays a key role in both Sula and Oranges are Not the Only Fruit. In Sula it is Sula Peace that is the Bottom communitys poster girl for evil; in Oranges it is Jeanette that incurs the wrath of her church. Judgment and methods of punishment differ greatly in the two novels, but the reasons for each womans labelling as evil are not that dissimilar. Jeanettes unnatural passions (105), or lesbianism, are what incite the church to take offense, and it is Sulas rebellious behavior that causes her community to boycott any and all relations with her. In both cases it is the womans unwillingness, or inability, to conform to the social standards that sets her apart and agitates the community. However, the way in which these differences are handled greatly differs between the novels. The magnitude of the cruelty and unforgivingness of the communitys judgment and punishment in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit exceeds that in Sula by far. The inhabitants of Medallions Bottom punish Sula Peace in an unaggressive manner, whereas Jeanette is outright exorcised. The Bottoms judgment of Sula as evil was widespread (in the community) and final. The first signs that Sula was evil were shown the moment she arrived in town: she stepped off the Cincinnati Flyer into the robin shit and began the long climb up into the Bottom (90). Her arrival on the same day that birds were creating a mess everywhere is blatant foreshadowing of the mess she herself creates in the coming time of her stay in Medallion. Morrison sums up the Bottoms reasons for viewing Sula as the personification of evil: When word got out about Eva being put in Sunnydale, the people in the Bottom shook their heads and said Sula was a roach. Later, when they saw how she took Jude, then ditched him for others, and heard how he bought a bus ticket to Detroit they forgot all about Hannahs easy ways (or their own) and said she was a bitch. Everybody remembered the plague of robins that announced her return, and the tale about her watching Hannah burn was stirred up again. (112) Soon after arriving in Medallion, Sula deems is necessary to place Eva in a nearby nursing home, though Eva is in no need whatsoever of being placed in such an institution-she is lucid and able to take care of herself. The Bottom is outraged at this decision. How can Sula just waltz into town and put Eva up in a nursing home while keeping the house for herself? This move is unprecedented in the community, and does nothing to alleviate the Bottoms view of Sula as evil. Furthermore, Sulas promiscuous relations with men, both black and white, is the central problem the community has with her. It must be kept in mind, though, that Sulas mother, Hannah, was equally loose, if not more so, and the Bottom did not despise her anywhere near as much as they do Sula. Why the dualism? As Marie Nigro writes, Sula uses men much as her mother (now deceased) had done but with a different spirit. Whereas Hannah had been sweet and without guile and had respected the ways of the community, Sula goes to bed with men as often as she can but then carelessly tosses them aside. It was a compliment when Hannah chose to sleep with another womans husband, but an insult when Sula did the same-she sees them as disposable and thus treats them that way. The wives are furious over this. It was the men, though, who said she was guilty of the unforgivable thing-the thing for which there was no understanding, no excuse, no compassion They said that Sula slept with white men (112). This is the crystallizing factor in Sulas evilness. As word of this spreads around, regardless of its accuracy, the townspeople either ignore Sula altogether or dream up complicated plots to torture her. Mixing of races is the ultimate sin. The fact that many of the townspeople are products of mixed relationships and it is not nearly as troublesome when black men sleep with white women does not deter their hatred of Sula in the least. The Bottoms judgment of Sula is also at times overly critical, as when she picks at food and does not exclaim over the excellence of the food. They conclude that she is laughing at their God (115). Community judgment of Sula is complex and dualistic, as the previous examples depict. Further, the Bottom communitys passiveness towards Sulas evilness can be explained by its view that the purpose of evil was to survive it (90). The people of the Bottom fully accept the presence of evil. In fact, as with the response to the sky blackening with pigeons, they reacted to an oppressive oddity, or what they called the evil days, with an acceptance that bordered on welcome (89). Thus, when it is final the Sula is evil and could do no good, the community does not lynch or do anything of the type to her. They did not stone sinners because it was beneath them. So how is Sula really punished for being who she is? The ensuing silence she receives from the town leaves her lonely and deserted among her own people; she is alone. The communitys attitude towards Sula is highlighted after she dies. She is left in her home, in her bed, for several days after she dies. In fact, it is it the police who come and take her away, Nel being the one had calls them because she feels it is the right thing to do. People do, however, attend her funeral, but this is out of politeness and civility as well. Contrary to what the townspeople initially believe, along with Sulas death the punishment of the Bottom began. Hatred for Sula unites the community against her and moves it to care more about its members in retaliation to her ways. The women are better to their husbands and the mothers better to their children, and when Sula dies, all reason for remaining good dies as well. On the other hand, the judgment seen in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is more straight forward and concrete. Jeanettes evangelical community in northern England is extremely religious, with set rules and guidelines. Anything against doctrine is evil, including Jeanettes unnatural passion. Unlike Sula, Jeanette does not have her entire church community against her. Elsie, though now deceased, Miss Jewsbury, and some other members believe she is free of blame. Jeanette has been raised in a strictly religious environment, so religious that she suffers in school from other students and teachers criticizing her deep involvement in matters dealing with God. For example, the head of the school, Mrs. Vole, interrogates Jeanette, You seem rather pre-occupied, shall we say, with God. Your sampler, for instance, had a very disturbing motif. Yes, your reading skills are quite unusual (41). Jeanettes stringent religious upbringing makes it all the more ironic, as well as horrifying, to the community and her mother specifically when she displays unnatural passions. Jeanette tries to express her love for Melanie to her mother, I explained how much I wanted to be with Melanie, that I could talk to her, that I needed that kind of friend (102). Of course, Jeanettes mother interprets this as more than just a friendship between her daughter and Melanie, correctly, even though Jeanette at the moment denies it. Consequently, the next time at church, Jeanette and Melanie are called out on the their unnatural passions. Melanie promises to give up the sin and is let off easy, staying with relatives in Halifax afterwards. However, Jeanette does not relent in her assertion that she loves Melanie and will never stop. This causes the pastor to send Jeanette home. She instead goes to Miss Jewsburys and spend the night there and has sex with her, and the next morning she returns to her home only to be locked up in the parlor as part of an exorcism! Tired and starving, Jeanette caves in and says she will repent for her sin. After this she maintain a life free of unnatural passions until she meets Katy, whom she has a love affair with. Discovered, Jeanette will not repent this time and stands firmly planted in her position. In response to this, her church privileges are revoked, as are the rest of the females privileges in the church. Jeanettes sinfulness is blamed on her having too much power; the notion that she is lesbian because thats how she was born is unthinkable. Jeanette leaves the community entirely here, choosing to be herself than conform to the churchs rigid social standards. Jeanettes own mother cast her out. There is doubt of the mothers own lack of sin: right at the bottom of the page was a yellowy picture of a pretty woman holding a cat. Whos that? I pointed out. That? Oh just Eddys sister, I dont know why I put it in there, and she turned the page. Next time we looked, it had gone (36). The role that the woman played in the mothers life is questionable, especially since Jeanettes mother admits that her past was not sin-free and far from chaste. So who is she to judge Jeanette so harshly? The community and mothers judgment is firm and unwaivering. There is no gray area, only black and white: stay with the church and abide by its moral code, or leave. The second time around her unnatural passions are revealed, Jeanette choses to leave rather than be punished for being who she is. Also more straight forward than that in Sula, the punishment in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit of Jeanette it downright cruel. The first time Jeanette is asked to repent, she eventually does so, but not before being exorcised and starved. Only a child at the time, she is not able to take control of the situation and is a victim of her mothers fervent religiousness and devotion to the church and its doctrine. The second time Jeanette is caught, she is older, thus able to make decisions for herself. When she decides that, rather than repent again and accept her lowered position in the church, shell instead move away from the community, she is ostracized by her mother and other ardent church members. Later when Jeanette works for a funeral parlour and services Elsies funeral, she is insolently spoken to: The pastor motioned to the flock. We wont stay to be mocked any longer. Oh hes a demon your daughter, wailed Mrs White, holding on to the pastors arm. Shes no daughter of mine, snapped back my mother, head high, leading the way out (157). The depth to which Jeanette is outcast from the community is incredible. Sula and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit have both similarities and differences between each other in the community judgment and punishment previously described. In both novels, the protagonist defies the accepted social norm. Jeanette is lesbian whereas Sula is rebellious and promiscuous, her own woman. In Oranges, judgment is based on religion-on a given doctrine. It is definite and inflexible; gray areas do no exist, life is black or white. Jeanette cannot be a lesbian and member of the church at the same time. In Sula, the opposite is true. Judgment is based on the communitys social standards, and they are far from definite and quite flexible. The perfect example would be the comparison of Hannah and Sulas sexual behavior. They are similar, but how they are received by the community is far from close. The Bottom is able to distinguish between certain qualities like Hannahs care for men and Sulas disposable attitude toward them. This is what makes the gray area possible. As for punishment, the two novels do not differ tremendously in methods, but in severity. Both communities ostracized the person they identified as evil. In Sula, however, Sula Peace remained in the community and was not forced into exile. The cold shoulder and fantasies about torture were the most drastic responses from those around here. The church community of Oranges steps up the intensity of punishment. Exorcism and starvation are used to force Jeanette to repent her lesbianism, and she is later ostracized by the church when she refuses to give up her lifestyle. The ostracization here, however, is magnified. Jeanette must move away from the community and her own mother refuses to acknowledge her status as Jeanettes parent! The extent of the cruelty and unforgivingness of the communitys judgment and punishment in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is much greater than that in Sula. While the reasons for labelling each woman may be similar, they do not fit the social criteria for normal, methods of punishment differ in many respects. Both women are cut off from the rest of community, but the Bottom does not physically or mentally harm Sula, nor does it drive her out of town. Jeanettes church does just that to her. The community of Oranges has a more stringent set of rules to adhere to, where following them is not an option but a requirement in order to remain on the good side of the church. Sulas Bottom community is flexible in its judgments and how the social rules are applied to every individual person; exceptions are allowed. Community judgment and punishment of those they see as evil in Sula and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit are certainly belonging to separate novels.

Without a content calendar that stresses consistency, valuable brand focused and industry relevant content the entire social media and digital effort will be sloppy. Audience mapping: Identify leaders, influencers, and key figures in the space. Content should be shaped and guided by the conversations of these industry figures. Focus the brands engagement efforts and optimize content to this audience. Additionally, the content style of others in your space should offer insight into what resonates with the readers. Timing: Content should be posted at optimal times based on the highest concentration of readers. The easiest method to start an audit about timing is to use Facebook Insights   which will highlight the trends. Frequency of content sharing and use of hashtags: Posting content at the right time is one aspect of timing. The frequency of sharing relevant content to these audiences is also important. It does take a bit of trial and error. Using hashtags can also boost reach of your content. How often is content posted? When are hashtags, if at all, used? How many hashtags? Image Quality: Unfortunately, this is a problem that many brands confront (more about this later). This should be as important as the rest of your content. Is the image shareable? Will it look right when shared across digital channels? Has it been tagged on the CMS backend? Word Choice: Brands often auto share their content without being mindful of what will actually engage their readers. Engagement vs Automation: Every brand schedules content. Automation helps, but it can’t replace human interaction and engagement. How often is content scheduled and pushed out and how often does the brand engage with its users, those who share its content? So a brand can easily grow their page by using a hashtag? Yes!   It's like adding keywords to your message to make it globally searchable. Which hashtags are right for your brand? Use Hashtagify to identify the relevance of a specific hashtag and other relevant ones associated to the main one. Once identified, brands can then leverage this information for competitive research, content curation, and influencer mapping. Every industry has hashtags. Remember, they’re like keywords. Search For Relevant Twitter Chats Once a brand has mapped the right hashtags, go one step further by searching for relevant Twitter chats. These weekly or bi-weekly online conversations on Twitter are a secret way to grow an organic audience. Your brand has just created its content bible by reverse engineering a content schedule framed around relevant conversations, industry topics, and optimal engagement.Tuesdays are now set in terms of branded content. Know that Timing is Everything Once you know what to post, now it’s time to determine when to post it. Organic growth starts with knowing when your brand’s audience is online. The other aspects of basketball – the rules, the technicalities – are all fluid and bent by the whims and preferences of the existing culture, even the existing playing teams. Street basketball may not be the roots of the sport, but through the years, it has becoming both the foundation of professional basketball as well as the avenue for the exercise of the growing subculture in street basketball. Ballard (2004) elaborates: Within the caged confines amidst the bohemian community of Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan can be found the essence of street basketball: all the grit, showmanship, competition, and spectacle that make the game great (pg 35). To those who are not indoctrinated in the culture of street basketball, it is easy to say that what they see being played on the street and what they see flashing on their television monitors are both the same game of basketball; that they share so many similar attributes and that the only thing different in street basketball compared to collegiate or professional basketball is the level of popularity. But that is far from the truth – because those who know and understand street basketball, those who lived and breathed street basketball, those who bled and literally died in the cement floors of the street basketball courts know that what they do where they do it is so much different from what high salaried pro basketball players do in the NBA. They have different stages where they play; they have different rules as well as different ways of enforcing it; they have different cultures and different reasons why they play basketball. The only thing they have in common is that they all want that leather and rubber spheroid up in the air and then inside the rim, swooshing the net that makes a catcall for such a sexy swing. Professional basketball is all about winning the coveted ‘ring’, about being able to parade around town like rockstars and hoist that championship trophy alongside guys who you might be elbowing the following season. In professional basketball, there is a certain convenience for players and team owners to just move from one team to another because it is just a job for them, but on the street, one’s alliance to a basketball team is a binding oath; jumping to another team is never about the job of getting the Ws and finishing the season with the ‘ring’, and most players who see a former teammate desert them always take it personal, because street basketball is never a job. It is a brotherhood where loyalty is the most expensive and most important aspect of a player, and those who sell it cheap will always have a ‘low market value’. Street basketball and professional basketball have different set of ethos – in street basketball, they play for their team’s pride and for the wager while in professional basketball, they play for their own personal pride and for their own personal salary, especially in today’s era when even the best of players are traded to other teams in exchange for the chance of the team’s long term vision to take shape. In street basketball, it is always here and now, every game feels like the last game, and it is hard to go home with a monkey on your back because when you lost, you did not just part with some of your money, you also parted with some ounces of self respect and the respect of the people in the neighborhood about you, your team and your game. Observing and analyzing human behavior – Like every cultural vestige and like every subculture type, included in the consideration for the analysis of certain cultural practices is the assessment of human behavior. In street basketball, there are also a set of prevailing human behavior and the dictating factors on why such patterns exist, appear and persist. The manifestation of these sets and patterns of human behavior inside street basketball is two-pronged; those which the average eyes can see and those which only the trained eyes can detect happen simultaneously. It is both reflected and hidden in the way they dress, in the way they talk and in the way they play the game. The human behavior patterns in street basketball depict that of the prehistoric tribes – it requires that only the fittest with the toughest set of behaviors survive. And what are these behaviors? The behavior in fighting, in negotiating, in people management and control of power all of these behaviors are essential for a person to survive the culture of street basketball. Without some of these behaviors, the individual is forced outside the circle of street basketball. Players fight for their place to be among those who are considered as respected basketball players in the street. Outside the five-on-five, there are those who wield similar power, clout and influence – those who fix wagers, those who tap, harness and control budding talents and those who are present in the circuit for their own socio-political reasons. One needs only to sit down by the bleachers and take a good look around to see the abundance of a diverse set of human behavior present inside one confined yet open spaced rectangular domain of street basketball. African American guys play with white guys and vice versa, and so does the relationship of those who have different ethnic descent, and this reflects the behavior of the individuals inside street basketball when it comes to ethnic sensitivity. Other easily discernable behaviors found in street basketball include the penchant of most basketball players for gambling, their obvious disregard for socially accepted behavior while in public like going topless for most of the time, spitting, cursing and the prevalence of foul and derogatory terms hurled at each other, the integration of gang related separatist attitude and the resorting to physical assault as a way to settle differences of avenge any feeling of indignation. Looking at street basketball players, the universal behavior noticeable is their take on street basketball as the end all and be all of their lives – they gamble every paper bill they have on the pockets of their pants, sometimes, even money that they don’t have, on a round of street basketball without serious regard for what will happen in the future in the event that they lose their bet; most of them would rather spend their days playing ball and cementing their hold among their peers and their social cliques, which sometimes result in the creation of strong bonds of brotherhood between two persons or among members of a group or the creation of intensive animosity as well; school is never an equally important priority, and the preference for the type of work they would engage on is similar on how they battle, win and lost in street basketball – exciting, thrilling and promises the yield of a quick buck.. Street basketball is a religion, while professional basketball is a mere day job for night shift dribblers, and the rituals that are involved in the daily exercise of their faith exists in different aspects – there are rituals of battle, rituals of praise, rituals done to ask for intercession and divine intercession as well as the rituals for both the victorious and the defeated. At some point, the ‘real’ and the ‘sports-based’ religion meets in the middle, when religion is infused in the practice of a competitive sport, because there is one ultimate human behavior that is manifested greatly in street basketball – and that is the desire to win, because winning is always more than the scorebook statistics; it is about winning wagers and bets, winning the respect of the crowd as well as the opponents and winning your own sense of self respect towards yourself. A sports activity is a particular cultural event, and like any other cultural event, st reet basketball is unique in different places. But despite these differences, this cultural event shares the same characteristic – and that is this: that it is the showcasing of the most primitive instinct that is present among humans inside the society; it is a display of skill, grace, strength and the set of values to which a person will be remembered for; it is a reminder of how fiercely competitive the world is, how one should earn everything with his bare hands standing on his own two feet alone. Cloning could significantly diminish the time needed to create these animal models and the outcome would be a community of genetically identical animals. Why I Deserve a Scholarship

I believe that I deserve a Big33 Scholarship for several reasons. My high attendance, academic achievement, determination, time management, financial need, motivation for college and to achieve better are all reasons I will discuss of why I believe I deserve a scholarship. The first reason is because I am very diligent in my studies and attend my classes every day. In my entire schooling career I missed very minimal amounts of school. I have obtained perfect attendance in grades 9th, 11th, and am working on 12th grade. In my 10th grade year I only missed one day of school. I have also had high honor roll every year in high school and plan to continue it throughout college. Another reason is I am very determined when it comes to both work and school. I take both of these aspects very seriously and when I’m given an assignment or task, I feel very obligated to not only complete it, but do so both correctly and in a timely manner. Also I am very good at managing many things at one time. For example, in my sophomore and junior year in high school I managed school, homework, church volunteer work, practicing the piano and attending my lessons and performances, babysitting (about 40 hours per week on the weekends, overnight) family and church activities and spending time with my friends, family and boyfriend. In my senior year I am managing school, homework, work, college and scholarship applications, practicing the piano and attending my lessons and performances, babysitting my nephew about one night per week, family activities, church events, student government events, and spending as much time as I can find with my friends, family, and boyfriend. Also, with just working a minimum wage job, I do not have enough money to go to college on my own funds. I am putting away a little bit of money from each pay check since I started my job but this, though it does add up and will help greatly is not going to be enough to cover my total of six years of schooling that is required to reach the position that I desire. My main motivation for going to college is to get ahead of the society. I want to make something of myself instead of being like so many Americans today and not having enough education to stay employed in the jobs that are bombing and have a high potential for growth. Nursing greatly interested me because I enjoy working with people and like to make their day better in any way I can. I absolutely love infants and that is why I want to continue my education until I reach a level of a Neonatal nurse. I want to obtain a job that I love to go to everyday. The quote by Confucius â€Å"Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life† is a huge motivation to me. That is why I chose nursing as my major, so I would get to work with infants, my favorite thing to do. These are a few reasons of why I believe that I deserve a scholarship from Big33 so that I can continue my education from high school and attend college.

The two forms of college education, the traditional on-campus degree and this new distributed learning approach, differ in a number of ways. Yet they both offer specific advantages. The composition of the student population has changed significantly since the 1980s. A large number of today's college students are older and more heterogeneous. They also demonstrate varying levels of academic preparation. Distributed learning programs are designed to enable individuals to achieve their educational and career goals in a way that is most convenient. They can arrange to study wherever they are and whenever they have the time arranged around their personal schedule. On-campus students also appreciate the other experiences they have. They personally meet people from all different backgrounds and countries and acquire skills on how to relate to others whose goals and values may very significantly. The colleges offer a variety of organizations, leadership and participatory involvement, and on-campus activities and special events. Being able to study directly in the campus library is very helpful. In addition to coursework, students can attend special lectures and seminars and enjoy school and community offerings such as movies, theater and museums. Lastly, an on-campus environment does not exclude technology and computer-based learning. Many students use their laptops and PCs to supplement their coursework, participate in chat groups, e-mail, and interact with the instructors. In many cases, the classes combine online and on-campus learning opportunities. Both distance and campus education can be advantageous. However, each student must decide which of these offer the most effective learning style based on personal traits and interests. For some individuals, Internet courses that let students learn at their own pace and review content until completely understood is the best method. Others learn best in an on-campus environment where they can be motivated by and involved with others in a traditional classroom setting.
